With the ITU-T has introduced a 40Gbps Passive Optical Network (NG-PON2) G.989 standard series, the next generation passive optical network (NG-PON) Development has taken a big step forward . ITU-T to ITU-T G.989.2 performed first modification, updating amendments to NG-PON2 the physical layer specification.
For service providers this is a landmark development. Service providers are currently waiting to see NG-PON2 in use to provide more than 10Gbps speed broadband access for businesses and potential home users.
NG-PON2 is tight with 1G G-PON (ITU-T G.984 series) and 10G XG-PON1 appears (ITU-T G.987 series) after, with multi-wavelength operation, the transceiver and receiver ONU wavelength adjustable, such as enhanced performance.Based on multi-wavelength and multipoint architecture, the main solution NG-PON2 is the time and wavelength division multiplexing
PON (TWDM-PON). Indeed, TWDM-PON by a four to eight wavelengths in both directions composition, the highest rate in each direction to achieve 80Gbps. For service providers, through the deployment of NG-PON2, they can re-use as previous generations of deploying PONs use optical fiber distribution network (ODNs). In addition, NG-PON2 wavelength allows GPON (ITU-T G.984 series) and XG-PON1 (ITU-T G.987 series) coexist.
For the entire industry, it is still in its early stages. Some service providers are building or infrastructure to take advantage of NG-PON, or field testing with selected customers.
At least three major service providers, including Verizon, Vodafone and Energia NG-PON have carried out field tests in 2015. (Text / Oscar translated).
