We supply a complete range of fibre optic cable and fibre optic cable accessories and will be adding these to our web site shortly. In the meantime, please contact our sales team with your individual requirements.
Fibre optic cable is made up of a bundle of glass threads that are able to transmit data modulated onto light waves. Using fibre optic holds many advantages over conventional copper or other metal based data cable:
- Bandwidth – A greater bandwidth to carry substantially more data, a single optical fiber can carry 3,000,000 voice calls or 90,000 television channels
- Weight – thinner and lighter than metal wires
- Theft – conventional cable use large amounts of copper so with lower value raw material it a less likely to be a target for theft
- Interference – Light transmission through optical fibers means it is less susceptible to interference from other data source and the optical fibre is electrically non-conductive, so it does not act as an antenna
- Digital – Data is sent digitally rather than analogically enabling faster processing
- Cost – normally more cost effective than metal data cable
Fibre Optical cable can be used for computer networking and telecommunication as it is flexible and can be bundled. It is especially advantageous for long-distance communications as the light propagates through the fiber with little attenuation compared to electrical cables. Each fibre can carry many independent channels, each using a different wavelength of light called wavelength division multiplexing (WDM).
For short distance application, such as a network in an office building, fiber-optic cabling can save space in cable ducts. This is because a single fiber can carry much more data than electrical cables. Fibre is also immune to electrical interference as there is no cross-talk between signals in different cables and no pickup of environmental noise. The non-armored fibre cables do not conduct electricity, which makes fibre a good solution for protecting communications equipment in high voltage environments, such as power generation facilities, or metal communication structures prone to lighting strikes. They can also be used in environments where explosive fumes are present, without danger of ignition.
Fibre Optic Fire Survival Cable
CG Cables recently helped a customer out in his time of need. We received a call from our customer asking if we could help him with the supply of a cable he was unable to find. His main criteria were that the cable had to be fibre optic fire survival cable with a steel tape […]
